The Evolution of Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy has been formed via an evolution of collected techniques known to influence body systems from all corners of the planet. Recently validated by medical science, massage techniques have been used through time to assist the human body in a harmonious, organic way, instilling health and wellness. The benefits of massage are enhanced by the use of hydrotherapy treatments, herbal oils and poultices, exercise therapy and ergonmic and postural awareness.

The History of Swedish Massage can be traced to multicultural origins. The first record of body therapies was scribed on papyrus dated 5,000 B.C. in Egypt. In Greek and Roman culture, massage was used by athletes training for sporting activities like boxing, track and field. Used throughout Europe and China, India and the Far East, "Swedish Massage" was formulated a by Hendrick Ling, a Swede who studied Asian massage techniques and amalgamated them with European techniques.

Western science has studied the effects of massage therapy and has found the following:

Massage Affects the Muscular System:

• By reducing muscular tension and areas of local spasm
_which cause pain and soreness in muscle tissue.
• By reducing Trigger Points and Muscular Adhesion fromtrauma, muscle injury
_and overuse, massage helps increase muscle length and function.

Massage Affects the Circulatory System:

• Massage increases circulation to all aspects of the body, improving tissue

_nutrition to skin, lymph, muscles and fascia.
• Assists the elimination of metabolic by-products from overuse or training.
• massage reduces post workout soreness.
• Assists in recovery from plyometric training (tissue damage)

Massage Affects the Nervous System:

Massage Therapy facilitates relaxation of the nervous system through its effect on the central nervous system. Massage can work to either stimulate the peripheral nerves as in some types of sports massage and techniques used to ‘waken” atrophied tissues. Most people use massage to assist the nervous system to relax. Relaxation during massage can be greatly enhanced by deep and complete breathing.
